Infrared Sauna is becoming the go-to method for anti-aging and mental health.
I began my journey with Infrared Sauna over a year ago, and it has become my absolute favorite time of the week. My sauna time is my weekly dose of therapy!
I suffer from eczema & dry sensitive skin, as well as anxiety, and I can’t tell you how much Infrared has helped improve my symptoms. It’s a calm, quiet place to collect your thoughts and escape from the world.
Not to mention, it kept me from getting sick this dreadful flu season.
Infrared Sauna is the real deal, and I bet it can help you with your problems too!
SO, WHAT’S AN INFRARED SAUNA?
An Infrared Sauna uses a combination of invisible rays of energy and LED Light Chromotherapy to detoxify and heal the mind, body and spirit.
What does that mean exactly?
Basically, these invisible rays penetrate your body directly, increasing your internal temperature and causes you to sweat.
There are 3 types of invisible rays from the sun on the spectrum (Near, Mid and Far). The saunas I happen to use produce the FAR rays.
FAR Infrared Therapy penetrates your body up to 2 inches (into the tissues, muscles and bone), increasing your internal temperature which allows you to sweat at a lower temperature than a regular sauna.
This makes for a much more pleasurable and tolerable way to detox without the abrasive heat you experience in a traditional sauna.
So not only does Infrared Sauna use these rays to increase your body’s temperature and help you sweat out toxins, but the different LED Chromotherapy colors offer their own list of added health benefits!
WHICH COLOR IS RIGHT FOR ME?
No matter your issue, there’s a color for you! I of course have my favorites, but I try to stay open-minded and listen to what my body needs.
Each day can bring on a new color depending on what’s going on in your life, or what ailment your body is trying to recover from.
RED– encourages cellular growth, stimulates circulatory and nervous functions, shown to increase libido (hellooo) and increase collagen cells to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
ORANGE– stimulates mental activity and boosts your mood, shown to eliminate localized fat, stimulates the respiratory system, relieves cramping (including menstrual cramps), and assists in asthma and bronchitis
YELLOW– strengthens the nervous system and the mind, energizes the muscles, improves skin quality, encourages the repair of scar tissue, provides optimism and lightheartedness, increases awareness
GREEN– calming energy, relaxes muscles and nerves, relieves bodily aches and pains, rebuilds damaged skin cells
BLUE– encourages relaxation (ideal for those with: anxiety, depression, sleeping problems and migraines), reduces acne by its ability to kill bacterial infections, stimulates a positive effect on mental and physical wellness
PURPLE– promotes stillness, reduces anxiety, enhances immunity, relaxes and calms the nerves, cleans the blood of poison or any unwanted cells, stimulates the spleen as well as white blood cells
WHITE– uses all the primary colors (red, green, and blue) and allows the individual to receive benefits from all colors used, increases levels of Vitamin D, brings harmony to all aspects of the mind and body.
WHAT SHOULD I KNOW BEFORE MY FIRST SWEAT?
Like any spa treatment, Infrared Sauna has certain etiquette or guidelines you should follow to make sure you get the most bang for your buck!
- HYDRATE!- Before you go in, you should be well hydrated. So don’t forget to have a couple glasses of water in the morning and continue drinking water throughout the day. It gets you in a great habit of hydrating often!
- Pick Out Your Essential Oils- Essential oils are diffused into your sauna to enhance your detox experience and stimulate your mood.
I love to use Peppermint & Eucalyptus if I go in the morning; these scents are energizing and help with congestion and breathing.
If I go at night, I prefer to use Lavender to help me wind down and get me ready for sleep.
- How Hot Is It?– For your first session, you will want to start out at 150 degress. Once you become more comfortable, you can sweat at temperatures as high as 170.
- What to Wear– Wear comfortable, loose fitting clothes. Regardless if you are a ‘sweaty person‘ or not, you will end up sweating by the end of your session– and be prepared for your body to perspire for an additional 10 minutes after you’re done.
You will want to wear clothes that are easy to get in and out of.
Don’t be like me and try to wear a pair of skinny jeans the first time and have to do that awkward jumping dance after to get back into your clothes.
- During Your Session– Everyone’s body is unique. Some people will begin to sweat after about 15 minutes into their first session, while others may take until the end.
However you sweat– it’s normal!
Just pay attention to how your body is handling the sauna. I typically end up opening the sauna door a couple times throughout my session to breathe some fresh air and hydrate.
Afterwards, I sometimes like to lay down and take it nice and slow before I get dressed and head out.
I also like to keep a towel over my head when I sweat so my head doesn’t get too hot. Some people don’t need to do this, but I’ve found that it makes me a little more comfortable.
- After Your Session– Again, listen to your body here and take it nice and slow if you need to. Towels are provided to dry yourself off, and most places will have a chair you can sit in if you want to relax.
It’s recommended that you wait at least 20-30 minutes to shower after your session in order to keep your heart rate up, continue burning calories, and detoxing.
If I’m being totally honest here, I actually prefer not to shower after I sweat if I can get away with it. (As long as I don’t have plans for the rest of the day and can keep my hair up in a messy bun)– this is a judgement free zone right?!
It’s the strangest thing, but I actually walk out of the sauna feeling incredibly clean.
It’s not like you wreak of BO and need to wash off.
You experience a different kind of sweat….a clean sweat. And people actually tell me that I smell good after because of the essential oils!
INFRARED SAUNA ON DATE NIGHT!?
Believe it or not, my favorite time to sweat is when my boyfriend and I sweat together. The large sauna we use has 2 seperate decks; one is elevated above the other (pictured above).
Now, don’t get any ideas, we keep our hands off of each other the entire time.
But honestly, the most amazing thing happens…
There’s something about being in a unique, calm environment close together that really coaxes you into opening up. We end up talking about all sorts of things like our childhood, our future goals, or maybe even what we are having a hard time dealing with in our lives.
The conversations we have during sauna time are special and vastly different from our day to day conversations.
It’s the perfect, relaxing outing with your significant other!
Try going out for an early dinner and hit the sauna on your way home. You get to detox and increase intimacy in your relationship at the same time!
But isn’t it time you start to take care of you?
Oftentimes we get so caught up in making sure that everyone else is ok, we forget to take care of numero uno.
It’s OK to indulge in yourself, and I bet those around you will actually thank you for it. I know I’m a much happier person when I have little balance in my life.
So take 30 freaking minutes for yourself and sweat out all the pain, anxiety or tension you’re feeling in your life! Use this time to meditate, close your eyes and be still, or even let out a good cry.
